FEARFUL FLYERS

PHOTO GALLERY
No matter how often you do it, if you're a fearful flyer you never fully get used to it. However, there are ways of making it easier here are some useful tips

- The first rule is don't try to hide it. There's no shame in being a nervous flyer; half the people on the plane will be feeling twitchy at some point. Let the cabin staff know when you get on board that way, they can keep an eye on you. If do get a bit jittery during the flight, it's reassuring to know there's someone keeping an eye on you.

- Book yourself a seat as far forward in the cabin as possible; turblence feels stronger at the back of the plane.

- Think of turbulence as bumps in the 'road'. Try not to tense up or fight against them; instead, let your body go with the flow. It may seem difficult, but if you relax into them they can be quite soporific a bit like being rocked to sleep

- Keep yourself busy. If you can't face doing any work, immerse yourself in a movie, perfect your sudoku skills or pick up a book. Anything that occupies your mind will make the flight seem quicker.

- If you can, steer clear of caffeine as much as possible. Anything that makes you feel more 'wired' will not help your nerves. A small glass of wine might relax you, but make sure you drink plenty of water; dehydration will only make you feel worse.

- Load some calming tunes onto your iPod; you could even make yourself an 'inflight' playlist. This will distract your attention from the noise of the plane and help you switch off.

- When you feel yourself getting nervous, take slow, deep breaths. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing; not only will this help take your mind off things, but it will slow your heart rate, helping you to calm down.

- If all else fails, there are special courses available that help people tackle the problem head-on. As well as classroom-based sessions, the courses often culminate in a short flight where you can put your new techniques into practice.
